Pilates Enhances Physical and Mental Wellbeing
Hi, I'm Anna-Maria Breil, a Pilates expert, sports scientist in training, and owner of a Pilates studio. I've been a Pilates instructor for 30 years and have been very physically active since I was a child. The fact that I run a Pilates studio today is based on the realization that after a severe herniated disc, it was only with the help of Pilates that I was able to recover.
To answer your question: It's not just my personal experience that Pilates is the foundation for any other physical activity. Pilates exercises have a very comprehensive effect on muscular strength, joint flexibility, and mobility, regardless of age. In my recent thesis, I created an evidence-based exercise program for fall prevention that includes numerous Pilates exercises. Competitive athletes use Pilates exercises as a supplementary program, and recreational athletes feel their physical strength improve. One participant told me that she can control the paraglider better with core strength when paragliding. A volleyball player comes to Pilates to protect herself from injury. It's no longer a secret that Pilates can prevent or alleviate numerous ailments.
What perhaps not everyone anticipates are the positive effects on the psyche. I'd like to highlight one perhaps less well-known benefit: The special Pilates breathing technique ensures more oxygen in the body, thus improving metabolism all the way to the brain. The fuller lungs also lift the chest and mechanically straighten and lengthen the upper body. An upright upper body is much less likely to allow negative thoughts to enter the mind. This means that Pilates exercises, with appropriate breathing that lead to an upright posture, can improve mood, whether it's for depressive tendencies or mood swings during menopause.
For years, I've been credited with always having a smile and a radiant demeanor. Pilates certainly plays a part in this.

Core Strength Boosts Performance Across Activities
Incorporating Pilates into my fitness routine has had a surprisingly significant impact on my performance in other physical activities. I've noticed that my core strength and stability have improved dramatically, which translates to better balance and endurance whether I'm running, cycling, or even lifting weights. Movements that used to feel awkward or unsteady now feel controlled and efficient.
One surprising benefit I didn't expect was how much it improved my mind-body connection. Pilates forces me to focus on precise movements and breathing, which has carried over into other workouts. I catch myself moving more deliberately in everyday exercise, reducing the risk of injury and making each session more effective. It's as if my body has become more aware of itself, and that awareness shows up everywhere — from sports to simple tasks like bending or lifting at home.

Pilates Improves Form and Speeds Recovery
Adding Pilates to my routine noticeably improved core stability, which translated into better form and efficiency during running and weight training. Movements that once felt unstable, such as single-leg exercises or overhead presses, became smoother because my posture and alignment held stronger under strain. The emphasis on controlled breathing also carried over into endurance workouts, helping maintain rhythm during long sessions.
The surprising benefit was how much it reduced recovery time. Pilates' focus on mobility and controlled stretching relieved muscle tension that would otherwise linger after intense workouts. Soreness diminished more quickly, which allowed me to train consistently without extended downtime. Many assume Pilates is purely about flexibility or low-impact exercise, but the hidden strength and recovery advantages make it a powerful complement to more demanding physical activities.
